インテリア/プロダクトデザイナーのÅsa Ohlssonにいくつかの質問に答えてもらったので紹介します。Åsaは、スウェーデンのデザインチーム、DesignDessert のデザイナーでもあり、2005年には自身のスタジオÅsa Ohlsson Design設立しています。
DL（以下D）. デザイナーになったきっかけは何かありますか？
Asa(以下A). 私は自分がクリエイティブである必要性をすごく感じているし、常に実践的な人間だと思う。幼い頃から新しいことを考えたり何かを作ることに興味があって、編み物に手芸、木工や写真、絵画など、たくさんのことに挑戦したわ。デザイナーと同じくらい夢中になれる職業は思いつかないわね。
D. 最も敬愛するデザイナーは誰ですか？また、どの様な影響を受けましたか？
A. 特定のひとりは挙げられないわ。
D.あたらしい物をつくるときにインスピレーションを受けるものはありますか？
A. たいていは日々の生活からそれは生まれる。それは必要性であったり、何か楽しくて愉快なものであったり。私はよく旅行に行くの。世界中でたくさんのインスピレーションを受けるわ。
D.今後チャレンジしたい材質や技法はありますか？
A. ガラスを使った作品。
D. 来日したことはありますか？もしあれば、その時の印象を教えてくさい。
A. 1997年に数ヶ月間、北海道の旭川にある東海大学に留学したことがあるわ。2000年には玩具のコンペで入賞して東京に行ったことがあるし、2003年には東京のスウェーデン大使館などで行われたSweden Styleに参加したわ。
D.デザインという観点から、日本の伝統や文化的背景についてどう思いますか？
A. すごく興味深いと思う。日本やヨーロッパの最近のデザインには日本の伝統や文化が非常に影響を与えていると思うし、またそれがよく現れていると思う。日本との交流はもう何十年もあるけれど、とくに最近はその魅力がかつてないほど高く評価されていると思う。
D. ストックホルムの街の良いところと悪いところを教えてください。
A. ストックホルムはヨーロッパの中でも最も魅力的な街のひとつだと思うわ。（自慢に聞こえないといいのだけど．．．）1年の中でも今の季節は本当に美しいの。たくさん公園があって、暑すぎず気持ちいい気候で清潔だし、水に囲まれた島々にはカフェやレストラン、自然がいっぱいある。素敵な文化とデザインが融合した街で、トレンドに溢れているけれど、とてもリラックスできる街。ただ、この街に住むには長くて寒い冬に耐えなくてはならないけれどね。
D. あなたの部屋で最も気に入っているものは何ですか？（インテリアでなくても構いません）
A. 最近新しいアパートに引っ越したばかりなので、今はまだ少し片付いていない状態なの。持っているものでは、Hanna Ljungström (www.hannaljungstrom.com)がデザインしたピンクのガラスのウサギの置物がとっても気に入ってるわ。The Naughty Spotという私がデザインした2mX2mのコーナーカーペットも愛用してる。そこでうたた寝をしたり書類を片付けたり、テレビを見たりと長い時間を過ごすことに気づいたの。これってとても日本風でしょ!?
D.部屋や空間をデコレーションする上で何かアドバイスはありますか？また、あなたがいつも気をつけていることがあれば教えてください。
A. 私はいつも壁、天井、床、隣の部屋、窓の外のスペース、全ての空間をクリエイティブに使うよう心がけているわ。広々としたスペースは必要だけど、くつろげる場所も大事だと思う。最近キッチンキャビネットを使ってソファを作ったの。長さは3.2m、高さは45cmで、下の部分が収納になっているし予備のベッドとしても使えるのよ。このソファは部屋の壁と壁の間にぴったりとおさまってるの。このソファの両端は安全なスポットなのよ。そこからは部屋全体が見渡せるし、そこは窓からは死角なので人目を気にすることもないわ。(ソファ部の回答がいささか簡素であったため、後日、再度説明を追加してもらっています。)
D. デザインを学ぶ日本の若者やデザイナーを目指す人に何かアドバイスをお願いします。
A. クリエイティブでいること。いっぱい旅をして様々な文化やものの考え方を経験すること。

DL(D).What brought you to be a designer?
Asa(A). I have a huge need of being creative and I have always been a practical person. Since I was little I have been interested in all kinds of innovations and handcraft and did a lot of knitting, weaving, wood craft, photography, painting etc. I can’t think of any other work that interests me in the same way.
D. Who is a designer you respect the most of all? And in which way has she/he influenced you?
A. I don´t think I have one in particular.
D. What inspires or leads you to new creation?
A. I think it usually comes from everyday life and a need, or something I enjoy or finds amusing. I travel a lot and finds lots of inspiration from around the world.
D. Are there any materials or innovations that you are interested to take in ?
A. I would like to work with glass.
D. Have you ever been to Japan? If you have, where was that and how was like?
A. In 1997, I studied a few month at Hokkaido Tokai University in Asahikawa. I also won a toy competition in 2000 and visited Tokyo for a week. In 2003, I participated in Swedish style, an exhibition at the Swedish embassy and a few other places in Tokyo.
D. What do you think about Japanese tradition or cultural background in design?
A. Very interesting, I think the Japanese traditions and culture is obvious and has strongly influenced design of today, in Japan as well as Europe. The exchange has been going on for decades, and fascination is as strong today as ever.
D. How is the city of Stockholm like? in good and bad way.
A. I think it is one of Europe´s most attractive cities (I hope I am not bragging?). It is really beautiful this time of the year. Lots of parks, nice climate - not to hot, clean, islands and lots of water, archipelago, cafes and restaurants, nice surrounding nature. It is a nice culture and design city as well trendy but in a relaxed way. Living here though, you need to stand a long and cold winter.
D. What is the most favorite thing in your own room?(doesn't matter if it's relative to interior or not)
A. I just moved into a new flat and everything is a bit unorganised at the moment. I have a pink glass rabbit designed by Hanna Ljungstrom, thatI enjoy a
lot (www.hannaljungstrom.com). I also enjoy my own 2x2 m corner rug (The Naughty Spot). I noticed that I spend a lot of my time on the rug taking a nap or doing paper work or watching TV. Very Japanese in a way isn't it!
D. Any advice to decorate someone's room or space. Or something you always care about in your room.
A. I try to use all my space in a creative way and that involves walls, celling and floor, maybe also the next room or space outside the window.I think I need a lot of open space but also a safe spot is important. I just designed a long sofa combined extra bed and storage, 3, 2 m built between two walls and protected from insight.
D. Any advice or tip to young Japanese who are studying design and aim to be a designer.
A. Be creative, travel and experience other cultures and ways of thinking.
